“Defined” open concept design. What does this mean?

Creating a space that allows for family social interaction while still designating separate work/living spaces.  Many families enjoy an open concept plan but still desire to have a space where they can get away.  An office space with French doors allows for an open room but can be separated if needed.  Maybe a small nook located off the main living room with a small library. 

Some may take this a step further and create an accessory dwelling the She-shed is one such dwelling.  Converting a shed into a home office, art studio or potting shed.
